THE BOOK

The Sum of Our Regrets

Time After Time, Book One of three

In the shadow of a seemingly ordinary Midwestern town, Time After Time plunges readers into a pulse-pounding saga of moral courage amid unrelenting darkness, where corrupt police, predatory dynasties, and hidden networks of trafficking and abuse hold an entire community in their grip. As a reluctant hero and his fierce, scarred love confront generational evil, spiritual warfare, and the cost of silence, this unforgettable novel lays bare the same forces that still haunt our streets today: human trafficking that thrives in plain sight, institutional cover-ups that protect the powerful, domestic terror that shatters lives, and the quiet complicity that lets darkness spread.

Urgent, raw, and ultimately triumphant, Time After Time is more than a riveting story of family, redemption, and righteous rebellion. It is a clarion call for our own fractured age. In an era of eroded trust, online exploitation, and battles for the soul of communities, Schneider's masterful tale reminds us that the hottest places in hell still wait for those who remain neutral, and that ordinary people, armed with love, faith, and unbreakable resolve, can still light the way out. A must-read for anyone who believes one stand against evil can change everything.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in a period of moral crisis, maintained their neutrality.

THE BOOK

Cana is Utica, Michigan

Cana is invented. The ground under it is not. Utica sits where the Clinton River and two old trails crossed, and it has been collecting names since 1817: McDougalville, Hog Hollow, Harlow, then Utica, after the city in New York the settlers had left behind.

It boomed on a canal that went bankrupt and a strap-iron railroad that failed. The bank went broke. The hotel burned. Fire swept the business district twice, in 1904 and again in 1905, both times on a Sunday.

Every street in Cana has a real one underneath it. These are three of them.

John's apartment

The corner building on Cass Avenue. Where John lands when he comes back to town, and where a good deal of the trouble finds him.

The Sentinel Building 2026

J David's newspaper, the quiet job John took to stay invisible. In Utica, the 1905 State Bank building still stands on the same corner.

THE AUTHOR

Edward W. Schneider

A short drive from the City of Cana

Edward W. Schneider grew up in a Midwestern town on the fringe of the Detroit metropolitan area, the oldest of six children. Just as with Marion and Paul in Time After Time, his mother stayed home and his father was an elite engineer at a major auto supplier. Part of his youth was spent on a farm and part in the suburbs. Just as with John, he won a major mathematics competition and attended a large Midwestern university on a full scholarship, playing a non-money sport for four years while majoring in mathematics and English literature.

Academic success, sport, hard work and heavy physical labor were all integral to growing up in the Schneider household. His father and grandfather bought farms from immigrant Polish and German farmers whose children had opted for more modern occupations. They renovated the farmhouses, added running water, electricity and heating, built additions and modern basements, then sold the houses with a few acres for hobby farms and kept the land. It gave Edward the tools and the experience to carry out the same projects himself, and to write about them with authority.

Through a series of serendipitous events he found himself in financial services, working alongside some of the most notable executives of the last sixty years. It let him travel widely and meet a slew of enigmatic people, many of whom are distilled into the characters of this novel. The book describes the May 1976 Maine potato futures market, which ran from about five dollars per hundred pounds to nineteen fifteen and back to eight twenty-five when the Idaho growers defaulted on their short positions and destroyed the contract. Edward traded that market, and did well out of it.

Today Edward lives a short drive from the City of Cana, Utica, Michigan. Married fifty-two years, he and Fiona have four children, nine grandchildren and one misbegotten great-grandchild.

Book Two

Following The Sum of Our Regrets, John Sankt and Margie Kitowski have barely drawn breath. The desperate rescue from the Anwalts’ brutality has become a full-scale war against two families whose power is rooted as much in ancient demons as in vice, extortion, and corrupt officials. With the assistance of the Archangel Michael, Margie fought to reclaim her soul nearly stolen by her mother’s apparition and the Hebrew demon that commands it. John and his sprawling Sankt-Rybak clan strike back on two fronts: a high-stakes commodity futures trap designed to bankrupt their enemies, and a series of midnight raids on the bars, gambling dens, and trafficking houses that feed Cana’s corruption. Disguised as Russian enforcers, they move through the night with zip-ties, silenced pistols, complemented by the killer-queen persona worn like armor by Margie.

Yet every victory exacts a price—poisoned bullets, burning buildings, a murdered child, and a community march that explodes into open battle against sheriff’s deputies, gremlins, and a mayor who is no longer merely human. The Father has slowly imbued god-like powers into John and Margie. John is given the power to direct lightning, which along with glass walls rise against sniper fire and the supernatural weapons of Satan’s strongest and most vile. And Margie’s Crux Imperator gives her dominion over her environment and burns white against two scarred hearts and red against the forces of evil.

John and Margie find there is no way to avoid further convict, No Exit.
